Hello again! It’s been a while.
I was talking to a lovely person the other day about some of the weird things military get up to when left to their own devices and my conversational companion had never heard of the CIA’s LSD experiments under the MKUltra project, and more pertinent to a hookers blog the Operation Midnight Climax (they don’t name secret stuff like they used too).
MKUltra was the weird ass stuff they got into for a while (remote viewing, telepathy, mind control etc). If you’ve seen the movie The Men Who Stare At Goats it’s along those lines. But for real. From Wikipedia
Project MKUltra—sometimes referred to as the CIA’s mind control program—was the code name given to an illegal program of experiments on human subjects, designed and undertaken by the United States Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).
But getting back to Midnight Climax (snigger) this was an experiment where the CIA set up brothels (yes) and hired sex workers to bring clients back where the clients, usually businessmen, would be given, without their knowledge or consent, LSD so the experimenters could monitor the effects on an unknowing civilian (really). They picked these targets because it was unlikely they would ever admit to going to a brothel when they got back home so they’d never say hey there’s some weird shit going on. Again from Wikipedia
It was established in order to study the effects of LSD on unconsenting individuals. Prostitutes on the CIA payroll were instructed to lure clients back to the safehouses, where they were surreptitiously plied with a wide range of substances, including LSD, and monitored behind one-way glass. Several significant operational techniques were developed in this theater, including extensive research into sexual blackmail, surveillance technology, and the possible use of mind-altering drugs in field operations.
Ken Hollins has done some radio documentaries years ago (I think the BBC played them) that are on things like this, one was on the RAND Corporation and also a series called Welcome To Mars. Both worth listening to if you can find them. (I can’t remember which one covered CIA using LSD, I think it was the Mars series). (Update: I have linked to them in an earlier post).
In the interests of client confidence I would like to point out I have no one-way mirrors in my apartment 🙂
